Clif Shot Bloks

By Special K • Jan 19th, 2006 • Category: Diet and Nutrition

Have you tried these little puppies?! First of all let me start by saying that I appreciate Clif’s effort to introduce an alternative to the standard energy gel/goo.

Clif Bloks

Here is what Clif has to say about them:

‘SHOT BLOKS™ offer very similar nutrition to SHOT Energy Gel. The primary ingredient for both is brown rice syrup which provides easily assimilated carbohydrates for working muscles. Both products also provide the mineral salts known as electrolytes. These electrolytes allow electrical impulses to travel properly throughout your body, permitting normal bodily function. When you sweat, you start to deplete your electrolyte stores and experience potential performance decline, so it’s best to help replenish them through food and fluid intake.’ - taken from clifbar.com

Three Bloks contain 100 kcal, with six in a package. They are very tasty and come in Cran-Razz, Lemon-Lime and Strawberry flavors. The Blocks are quite sizeable for my small mouth, taking me two bites each to consume. They have the density and texture of gummy bears. My personal sense is that these are a great fuel source for other sports, such as biking and hiking, but may not be the answer for most runners. A single package is quite large and difficult to open while on the move. On the other hand, this may be the product for you if you are unable to stomach energy gels.

Post a comment if you have tried Clif Bloks. I would love to hear other runner’s opinions.

  1. Thanks for posting this review. I am just starting out on my training for a half marathon and I saw these little guys in the grocery store. I am going to give them a try!!

  2. Try ‘em out Barbara! I ran my long run yesterday with another new product, by Jelly Belly, called ‘Sport Beans’. It is nice to have a few alternatives to the standard energy gels.

Let us know what you think about the Clif Bloks. Thanks for posting.

  3. I actually like these guys, having received a sample pack with my recent purchase of Rudy Project glasses for cycling. I like them a lot as I can’t mentally get energy from the goo and don’t like eating it. I like having something to chew that doesn’t get melty/too soft like bars on a hot day. I think they are tasty, and I agree that they are best for sports where the opening of the pack isn’t a big issue.

  4. Thanks for leaving a comment Courtney.

I have used Clif Bloks a few more times since the original posting. They truly are a great alternative to Gu. Every time I train for a marathon I swear to myself that I will never eat Gu again… :)
