Their objective is to reduce the display of at-risk behaviors among their participants (including teen pregnancies, eating disorders, substance abuse, and depression) by providing girls with tools and encouragement to make healthy decisions and form healthy self-images.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) provides a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls ages 8 to 13. The program combines training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. Girls can be of any fitness level - each participant is encouraged to train at the level they are most comfortable at.

The GOTR approach encourages its participants to talk with their parents/caretakers, with their same-sex peers, and within themselves. Girls meet twice a week for 10 weeks with trained, screened Girls on the Run coaches. Each 1.25 hour session combines physical activity (running) with experimental learning to teach very specific and well-defined social and personal (character development) skills.
