My training is well underway for this year’s Chicago Marathon. I’m really looking forward to running on 10/10/10 as this will be my first Chicago Marathon, my first out of state marathon and my 8th marathon to date. Preparation for this marathon has been a bit different than all of those previously. I’m more relaxed. I have a general training plan that I’ve been tailoring week by week. It’s very much a work in progress. Running a number of races has taught me that you’ve got to be flexible during training. Life is busy and I’m not going to let a planned training run get in the way of a work happy hour or a friend’s BBQ. Sometimes I miss a run (or two) and that’s ok. I’ve posted my current progress/plan on Google Docs for all to gawk at. I hope to be able to spend more time blogging about my progress in the weeks to come.

Major League Baseball's All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run returns for 2010. This year's run will take place on Sunday, July 11, 2010, presented by Nike.

Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run returns for 2010. This year’s run will take place on Sunday, July 11, 2010, presented by Nike. MLB will donate all net-proceeds from the event to four charities supporting cancer research and education – Prostate Cancer Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and City of Hope.

Participants will run and walk on a baseball-themed course featuring appearances by MLB legends, mascots and celebrity guests. The course will begin outside of Angel Stadium of Anaheim, home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and host of the 2010 MLB All-Star Game, and travel through the surrounding neighborhood. The course will take participants through the ballpark where they will take the final stretch of the race on the warning track, giving fans an exclusive glimpse of the Big A in advance of the 2010 All-Star Game.

The 5K, an officially timed event, will begin at 7:30 am PST. Immediately following, at 8:00 am PST the family-friendly 1-mile Fun Run will begin. All finishers will receive a commemorative All-Star medal and t-shirt.

It’s not too late to sign-up! Registration and event information is available at www.allstargame.com.

After my less than stellar outdoor run on Tuesday, last night I was determined to get in a good run by logging some time on dreaded treadmill. As a longer distance runner, this is always a bit tricky. My gym doesn’t have time limits to their cardio equipment, but even so I try to be courteous – hitting the gym during non-peak hours for my long runs.

I arrived at the gym around 9:15 last night. Seemed like a solid plan. Parking my car, I caught a glimpse of the treadmills through the window. They were all full! I sat in my car for a few minutes, pondering what to do. After about 10 minutes I decided to leave and drove back home. I just didn’t have it in me to wait any longer. So frustrating. Los Angeles is so congested. The streets are crowded, the gyms are crowded. So today I’m going for attempt #3. I have my running gear at work with me and plan to run around the neighborhood by my office before driving home. Fingers crossed.
